2018 was an interesting year to say the least. From the highest of highs when my wife and I purchased our first house (with a dedicated music/records room) to the lows of watching the rest of the world seemingly burning down around us. Once again I had a pretty great soundtrack to get me through everything.
It's probably no surprise that Hot Snakes tops the list this year, it's almost impossible to believe they wouldn't. But I have to point out again just how great The Pretty Flowers album is. It would likely have grabbed the top spot in any year that didn't have a John Reis band record released. It's an incredible album that everyone really needs to go check out.
The top 10 is really strong this year. Custody put out an unbelievably good album and followed that up with a great show that I was able to go see. The Stayawakes also deserves your attention if they slipped under the radar. I didn't even review Unlikely Friends this year as I didn't buy the CD in the hopes that it would eventually be released on vinyl. It never was so I just ordered it. I'll have a full review up in a few weeks.
Usually I have a top 30 list, but this year there just wasn't quite enough to fill it out since I don't count singles compilations (Marked Men, Carbonas) or reissues. I'm uncertain as to why I had less records than usual. Was it just a weaker year? Am I getting older and more out of touch? Did I just not have as much disposable income due to the house purchase? I'm not really sure. I guess we'll have to wait until next year to see if this is a trend or a one year anomaly.
I'll be back writing my daily reviews on January 7th. Until then, I'm just going to relax, enjoy some days off from work and sit on my couch and watch the New Japan Pro Wrestling Tokyo Dome show on January 4th. See you next year.
